Modernization Productivity- Part 3

Updated: Dec 29, 2022

III Measuring Modernization Productivity – measuring metrics for tangible benefits

Being able to show quantifiable progress and positive results for any undertaking is a good thing. In IT, obtaining data that shows a development project is on the right track to help the business is a great thing. And, when benefits may be measured both during a project’s development process, and after, to assist the company’s effort, that’s an extraordinary thing…

Implementing a mainframe application modernization project can have clear advantages and immediate impact. For both the IT group in particular, and the business in general, the results are beneficial and many. Especially when an innovative automation tool suite specifically designed for the job is brought to bear.

TICSoftware and BluAge provide organizations in diverse industries with the tools and professional services to modernize legacy applications – all backed up by years of expertise, experience and proven success. They have helped dozens of firms by integrating the latest technologies into existing mainframe systems such as web and email services, content management, cloud computing and other advanced technologies.

Application Transformation – By the Numbers

The BluAge modernization toolkit automates the transformation and re-architecture of legacy application code. More than just converting with unparalleled speed and accuracy though, the transformed code has also been tested and debugged during conversion – with an accompanying regression testing repository created as well. The results? BluAge transformation throughput produces from 1,000 to 3,000 lines of converted and parallel tested code per man day versus manual rewriting production of 200 lines of code per man day.

When companies look to keep their HP NonStop, IBM or other mainframe applications up-to-speed with current technology, they generally have three choices; application development, package applications (off the shelf) or modernization – with the results varying greatly as the following study conducted by the Standish Group shows:

Modernization Study Results Comparison

In comparing the resolution results of all three cases, modernization stands out as having the highest chance of success and the lowest chance of failure. Application package implementation is also favorable to success, but more likely it will be a challenged project. However, the package implementation is twice as likely to fail as the modernization project. The largest risk for the organization is the new software application development. It is six times more likely to fail than a package implementation. New software development projects of this size have a poor track record in general, and only organizations with a very high-quality project environment have success.
